Individual Therapy

Clinically guided one-on-one therapy for children, teens, and adults.

Mental health concerns can affect how people think, feel, behave, and navigate everyday life. Anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties, and other emotional challenges may develop gradually or emerge in response to significant changes. Understanding what contributes to these experiences is an important part of determining how to address them.

Individual therapy gives you a structured, private setting to explore personal concerns, understand patterns in your thoughts and behavior, and build strategies for managing emotional challenges. Treatment is guided by your needs, history, and goals, with an emphasis on insight and skills you can use outside sessions.

At Philadelphia Integrative Psychiatry, individual therapy is part of a broader approach to mental health care that considers psychological, behavioral, and biological factors together. When appropriate, therapy can be coordinated with psychiatric evaluations, medication management, or other services, allowing treatment decisions to reflect a more complete understanding of the individual's mental health.

Who Individual Therapy May Help

Support for the emotional, behavioral, and psychological challenges that affect everyday life.

Individual therapy may be useful for people experiencing mental health symptoms, navigating difficult circumstances, or seeking to better understand patterns that influence their well-being. Treatment is individualized to the person's concerns, stage of life, and clinical needs.

  • Anxiety & Stress

Understanding patterns of worry, managing physical and emotional responses to stress, and developing more effective strategies for navigating challenging situations.

  • Depression & Mood Concerns

Addressing persistent sadness, low motivation, irritability, or changes in mood that interfere with relationships, responsibilities, and daily functioning.

  • Emotional Regulation

Developing skills to recognize emotional responses, manage distress, and respond more effectively to frustration, uncertainty, or overwhelming experiences.

  • Relationships & Interpersonal Challenges

Exploring patterns in communication, boundaries, attachment, and relationships that may contribute to recurring conflict or emotional distress.

  • Life Transitions & Adjustment

Navigating changes involving school, careers, relationships, family responsibilities, grief, or other circumstances that require emotional and psychological adjustment.

  • Self-Understanding & Behavioral Patterns

Identifying patterns in thoughts, behaviors, and responses that may be contributing to ongoing difficulties and developing more intentional ways of approaching them.

Individual Therapy for Every Stage of Life

Age-appropriate care that reflects how mental health needs change over time.

Emotional development, relationships, responsibilities, and mental health concerns evolve throughout life. The challenges a child experiences are different from those faced by a teenager, young adult, or older adult, and therapy should reflect those differences.

At Philadelphia Integrative Psychiatry, we provide individual therapy across age groups, adapting treatment approaches to each person's developmental stage, clinical needs, and life circumstances.

Children (Ages 5–13)

Child therapy focuses on helping children understand emotions, develop coping skills, and manage behavioral or social challenges. Treatment may incorporate play-based activities, behavioral strategies, and age-appropriate therapeutic techniques, with caregiver involvement when clinically appropriate.

Teens (Ages 14–18)

Teen therapy addresses the emotional, social, and developmental challenges of adolescence. Treatment helps teenagers navigate anxiety, mood concerns, identity development, peer relationships, and growing independence while building skills for emotional regulation and decision-making.

Young Adults (Ages 18–25)

Young adult therapy supports individuals navigating increased independence, changing relationships, academic or career pressures, and the transition into adult responsibilities. Treatment may focus on anxiety, depression, identity, executive functioning, and developing more effective strategies for managing daily life.

Adults (Ages 25+)

Adult therapy addresses mental health concerns and challenges that arise across adulthood, including mood and anxiety disorders, relationship difficulties, work-related stress, life transitions, and longstanding emotional or behavioral patterns. Treatment focuses on understanding contributing factors and developing practical strategies that reflect the individual's circumstances and goals.

Care That Considers the Whole Person

When Individual Therapy Can Be Useful

Individual therapy can help when emotional or psychological difficulties start affecting your relationships, responsibilities, decisions, or quality of life. Some people come in with a specific concern, such as persistent anxiety, depression, or stress. Others notice recurring patterns in their relationships, emotions, or behavior without knowing what’s behind them.

Thoughts, emotions, behaviors, personal history, and outside stressors often interact in ways that are hard to see on your own. Working with a therapist helps clarify those connections and which patterns may be contributing to ongoing distress.

Treatment often goes beyond talking through concerns. Depending on your needs and the approach, it may include learning specific coping strategies, changing behavioral patterns, strengthening communication skills, or finding better ways to respond to difficult situations.

The relationship between mental and physical health may also be important. Sleep, medical conditions, medication effects, attention difficulties, and other biological or behavioral factors can influence emotional well-being. Recognizing these interactions helps inform decisions about whether therapy alone is appropriate or whether additional evaluation or treatment may be beneficial.

At Philadelphia Integrative Psychiatry, individual therapy can be coordinated with psychiatric care, medication management, psychological evaluations, and other services when clinically appropriate and with your consent, so you don’t have to interpret recommendations from separate providers on your own.

The goal is a clearer understanding of your mental health, build practical skills for managing challenges, and informed changes that support your well-being over time.
