How is TMS different from ECT?

TMS uses magnetic pulses, and can be conducted in an outpatient clinic without any altered state of consciousness. Whereas, ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) uses electrical currents, requires anesthesia, and must be conducted in a hospital setting. TMS has fewer side effects, and ECT is often used for severe, treatment-resistant cases where TMS hasn’t worked.
