Is Ketamine safe in bipolar depression?
From what we know so far, it appears that Ketamine is one of the safest medicines indicated in major depressive disorder (esktamine is FDA approved for treatment resistant depression) that does not significantly increase the risk for mania in patients with bipolar disorder.
More studies are needed, but from what we know at the time of this post, ketamine does appear safe in patients with bipolar disorder. This assumes the patient is also on a mood stabilizer during treatment.
It should be noted that many patients with bipolar disorder are prescribed lamotrigine-- that is one of the medications known to lower the benefit from ketamine treatment. Please talk to your provider about this should you consider ketamine treatment.
