About my practice
I combine an openness to innovative treatments, an intense focus on research, a conservative approach to medication management, an emphasis on confidentiality, and an empathetic understanding of my patients’ concerns.
My training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, work in area crisis centers and emergency rooms, years of inpatient work at the University of Pennsylvania followed by The Horsham Clinic, and starting a treatment center for treatment resistant depression, have all shaped me into the psychiatrist I am today.
I treat Mood Disorders (Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Dysthymia), Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD), symptoms related to Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders (OCD, Social Anxiety Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, among others), Intermittent Explosive Disorder, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Substance Abuse, and PTSD.
Areas of Specialty
Depression and Bipolar Disorder
I look to employ a combination of therapy and, when necessary, psychopharmacology to treat individuals with depression. I think it is also imperative to look into what may be leading to the depression. In all cases, I try to minimize medications and pay careful attention to potential side effects. Similar goals are made for Bipolar disorder.
Substance Use disorders
I view substance use disorders and addiction as diseases that deserve intense treatment. I work closely with area therapists and group practitioners who specialize in addiction treatment, while I focus on both the addiction and co-occurring disorders.
Anxiety hits individuals in unique ways, but the common denominator is that it can be extremely debilitating. I have experience in treating Social Anxiety, OCD, Generalized Anxiety, Separation Anxiety, and Panic Disorder with therapy, psychopharmacology, and, in some cases where the research backs it, with supplements.
Autism spectrum disorders
My training at Upenn and CHOP, followed by years of experience working inpatient, have all afforded me a great deal of experience working with patients on the autism spectrum. I greatly enjoy working with this population and employ both on-label and off-label treatment options.
I am conservative with how I diagnose and treat ADHD. However, there is a subset of patients who are unable to reach their full potential because of their inability to focus and impaired impulse control. I attempt to find the treatment options that maximize their goals while minimizing risks, such as side effects and addiction.
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
PTSD is more than nightmares and flashbacks. It is anxiety, hypervigilence, and it can take over ones life. Comorbid disorders include mood swings, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, avoidance, hyperarousal, and problems with focus. I am certified in prolonged exposure therapy for PTSD and have had great success treating clients of all ages.
